NAEM 2025

Call for conveners and topics for the parallel and workshop sessions

The NAEM 2024 organising committee invites those interested to organise / convene a parallel session or a workshop, to fill in the details of what you propose below. The conference does not have a dedicated theme this year, but a variety of ecological topics will be covered during the parallel sessions. The deadline for submission of parallel session proposals is Thursday 12 September 2024

NOTE: The registration for NAEM 2024 will be open from September onwards.

Three different options are available:

  1. Pre-determined session topics The Organising Committee has listed a number of relevant topics in ecology for the parallel sessions (see below). Conveners of pre-determined topics will receive the submitted session abstracts and develop the scope of the session “bottom-up” (from the presentation abstracts chosen to represent the session). When you want to convene one of these sessions please indicate the topic and a list of all conveners during the registration.
  2. Conveners for non-listed sessions When you find that a relevant session topic is not listed and you would want to convene such a session, please submit a session title, a short highlight (max 75 words) and a list of all conveners. More general topics will have a priority compared to the narrow topics.
  3. Conveners for workshop sessions Please submit a workshop session title, a short highlight (max 75 words) and a list of all conveners.

Pre-determined session topics

  1. Species interactions
  2. Ecological networks
  3. Community ecology
  4. Ecological scaling
  5. Eco-evo dynamics
  6. Spatial ecology
  7. Tropical ecology
  8. Behavioural ecology

  10. Restoration
  11. Novel/Emerging tools in ecology
  12. Theoretical ecology
  13. Macroecology and biogeography
  14. Biogeochemical cycle
  15. Agro-ecology
  16. Long-term ecological data
  17. Stress ecology

Please note:

  • Per session we need 2-3 conveners.
  • Conveners of a session must have a diverse background in terms of institute, gender and age balance
  • The registration and call for abstracts for NAEM 2025 will be open from September onwards.

Set-up of Parallel Sessions

  • Each parallel session consists of one overarching presentation and four more specific presentations on in-depth research topics;
  • The overarching presentation, highlighting the topic of the parallel session, is generally given by one of the conveners or a senior scientist;
  • Presentations last 15 minutes, followed by 5 minutes discussion;
  • After the parallel session programme has been determined there will be a call for the actual presentation early in October (with a deadline for submissions around mid-November).

Responsibility of the session organisers / conveners (generally 2 per session)

  • Defining the scope of the session and formulating this in a short highlight;
  • Filling the sessions with 5 presentations. This involves selecting presentations based on presentation abstracts (submitted in response to the call for presentations) and possibly inviting potential speakers directly;
  • Informing the NAEM office regarding titles of the presentations, speakers and their affiliation and abstract of each presentation (max 75 words);
  • Collecting the presentations on the day of the session, preparing the session, and coordinating the session itself (keeping track of time, moderating discussion, supporting the speakers, etc.)

Set-up of Workshops

  • The set-up and time allotted to a workshop has many degrees of freedom but normally lasts as long as one parallel session (2 hours).
  • One can think of workshop sessions in which demonstrations are given, discussions are held on a specific topic or a short course is given
